IPM Technologies P/L has just commenced a new project funded by Horticulture Australia Limited and the processing potato industry to prepare potato growers and all in the industry for the possible arrival of potato psyllid. Potato psyllid can cause up to 80% losses of potato crops and is currently in New Zealand. An IPM approach is being trialled in New Zealand by IPM Technologies in conjunction with private agronomists, potato growers and Plant and Food Research.
This year there are more than usual green bugs in potatoes and tomatoes. They are called "green potato bugs" and are fairly common on solanaceous plants such as potatoes, tomatoes and capsicums. They are true bugs and so are sucking insects. Where they put their sucking mounthparts they damage the cells of the plant they are feeding on. So they seem to kill the growing tips of potatoes and cause spots on tomatoes and capsicums.
We are continuing to work in NZ on a strategy to control Potato Psyllid in potatoes, and hope to start work on a new project in Australia to prepare for the possible arrival of this pest.

To help farmers, agronomists, students and the chemical industry understand IPM we run both short and long-term training courses. From our base in Hurstbridge, Victoria, we help individual farmers and corporate farms to be able to adopt IPM and currently offer IPM support across Australia and New Zealand.
